Development

Film noir can be subdivided into three broad phases. The first phase of film noir was the war-time period (1941-1946 approximately). It was a phase of the private eye and the lone wolf, classy directors like Curtiz and Garnett, shooting at studio sets, and in general, more talks than action. The examples are Citizen Kane (Orson Welles, 1941), The Maltese Falcon(John Huston,1941), Casablanca (Michael Cartiz, 1942), and The Dark Mirror (Siodmak, 1946).

The second phase of film noir was the postwar realistic (1945-1949). It was more towards the problems of crime in the streets, political corruption, and police routine. The examples are such as Dark Passage (Delmer Daves, 1947) and Act of Violence (Zinnemann, 1949).

The third phase of film noir was the period of psychotic action and suicidal impulse (1949-1953). The examples are White Heat, Gun Crazy, D.O.A., Caught (Max Ophuls, 1949) and Sunset Boulevard (Billy Wilder, 1950).

Types of film noir form have continue evolved after 1950s. However, the classical film noir did not die with Touch of Evil (1958) but the style and the concept have been faded. It has develop deeply to next level while maintaining the elements of classical film noir.

Neo Noir which also known as Post Noir has comes after the “golden age” of film noir. The reason of why film noir faded and neo noir have developed were because of social attitudes and changes of people mind set. Neo noir has become more powerful and feature narrative story that is more complex by adding in the characterization, and putting in more iconic and thematic developments (Conard, 2007).

In 1970s, society shows that much greater change in term of social and culture perspectives. The powers of female have much more increased in society and threaten the male power. Women were no longer victims compare to film noir but had a greater chance and freedom to let them choose whom they want to ally with. The idea of feminism has become stronger in the movie The Spanish Prisoner (David Mamet,1997),
which has lists out all the information that concerning to the aspects of the case situation, to let the femme fatales easy in investigation. From that movie, it shows that the neo noir femme fatale relies more on their intelligence to solve problem.

The purpose of classical film noir is to make the audiences to build a relationship with the anti-heroes which also require the audience try to think about the characters feeling (Prabhat, 2011). However, neo noir reverse it by using the unconventional camera moments and other modern circumstances which the details that were typically absent to remind the audience they are merely watching the film and not to take actions in noir films.

Filmmakers realized that neo noir not only follow the film noir conventions but also more aware of the role of technology that plays in society. Basically, the neo noir conventions are much obvious at the beginning of film such as camera angle, content, shot and etc. Neo noir have successfully resurge the film noir in contemporary American cinema, although they have differences but still accepted by the audience and society.

The classic film noir does not exist in colour, but the new trend appear with the advancement of technology, in which the neo noir develop it by adding in the colour element into the film (Schwartz, 2005). A great example movie is Chinatown (Roman Polanski,1974) which is the most important film during 70s. The stylistic elements different from classical film noir as the film has used colour in the film and eliminated the visual which are shadowy and have darker feel.

When time moving from 1980s to 1990s, neo noir was still expanded and popular used among the society. Neo noir can work with classical Film noir. A good movie example is Fargo (Joel Coen,1996) which have follows the type of classical film noir story themes by create a crime movie with very basic dark tones while also put in neo noir elements. In that movie, the film is shot in colour and underlying comedic element has also been added in. Filmmakers not just simply use any element inside a film but also look over what is the latest trend in that society and what the world going on in future. The reason why Fargo (Joel Coen,1996) include comedic is due to the rise of comic book adaption in this few decade that have been research by the filmmaker.

In a nutshell, neo noir have keep on developing to satisfy the audience and fulfill the audience expectation in watching film. It is considered better than other genre as it reflects the true feeling and fear we shared in common, such as the issues of corruption, crime, greed and lust in the film are the things that audience can easily identify with.
